I got a
new internet service provider. Well I finally got fed up with the
recent erratic behavior of my current wireless broadband connection and
decided to disconnect it. Checking what's currently hot in store for me,
I came across the new Globe Tattoo Product which was announced a couple
of days ago. The latest addition in Globe's line of mobile broadband products, the new Tattoo MyFi. It is essentially a rebranded Huawei E5. I think the rebranding also involves firmware modification.
So to replace my old problematic internet provider, now I got the new Globe Tattoo MyFi! So far, here is what I got.
Likes first.
1. Small, light, and very pocket-able device. Very useful when you go around carrying multiple devices. It even works even as Multi-device access via Wi-Fi and USB at the same time. Cool Stuff! It spares me one more USB port unlike my previous dongle.
2. Connectivity. Myfi accesses the wireless internet network via HSDPA, 3G/UMTS, EDGE, GPRS, or GSM up to 2 Mbps. I signed in a plan 999 with two years holding period as usual. And of course upload/download speeds are dependent on what connection you are able to access in your location. In my case as I live in Makati area, I got a constant terrific HSDPA!
3. Share connection with other devices. Technically, the Myfi is a mobile 3G modem, router, and wireless access point. As a 3G modem, it connects to your 3G network provider (in this case Globe). As a wireless access point, it serves up to 5 wireless clients which can then connect via the router to the 3G modem, and then to the Internet. Any Wi-Fi enabled device can access the internet via Myfi’s Wi-Fi signal.
One thing about Wi-Fi Protected Setup. I have read in the manual that it can generate a network key without manual input. Though I prefer manual input, it is an option incase you don’t want to remember the passphrase every time. So to do this, just power on the MyFi then start the clients connected to it.
Then enable the WPS function of the MyFi by pressing and holding the Wi-Fi/WPS button and enable the WPS function of the Clients.
4. Sharing Data Stored on the microSD card. Very easy to setup. Just insert the microSD card, access the web management page by typing http://e5/home. And go to the SD Card panel to manage the data stored on the microSD card. It replaces my standard Bluetooth activities.
5. Sharing SMS. I also enjoy the short message service (SMS) on the web management page. Also very easy, just access the web management page then click SMS to view, create, reply, or send a message. Btw, there are 200 SMS free inclusive of the postpaid plan.
Now here are the Dislikes.
Actually dislike (without the s). Just one thing, it has a battery that lasts around 2 hours with one charge. I'm not sure if charging it via USB from a laptop is really convincing, since Myfi is not a dongle type device you have to be a little careful of moving around.

Warning: Falling Hazard.
I'm planning to buy a charger. Hopefully, I can find a 5.3V/650mA AC adapter that matches.
So far this is what I got. In a not so distant future, maybe I will try other devices like PSP. Don't worry I'll add it here.
All-in-all the features of the Myfi provides for a lot of possibilities. It is an easy-to-use home wireless provider or outdoor mobile connectivity. My friends would love this device especially for small network games sessions.
Well, from where I stand...I think its worth giving a try. Cheers!
